850 1993 Rear speakers quit after few minutes of turning on.

Post by fivefortune »

My radio's rear speakers has no sound after the radio or tape deck plays for a few minutes. The playing time gets progressively shorter the more often the radio is used. Eventually it does not produce sound upon turning on the radio. I've found that when you disconnect the radio's power (when you remove the fuse and re-insert) and reconnect power, whne the radio is first turned on and punching in the security code, the rear speakers have sound (music or broadcast receeption sound) but after a few minutes, it cuts off again. Is it time to replace the radio? Or is there a easy fix? Could it be the speakers?

I'm no expert but here's my experience: the stock radio in my 850 had two problems. The first one was the one you're having--the radio would fade out quickly. The second one was the volume knob had that 'scratchy' sound when turning up/down the volume. In my quest to find a replacement at pull-a-part I tried quite a few from 850's ('93-'96). Most had one or both of the problems mine had. I finally crossed a 960 wagon which had the SC-811 radio which had neither of those problems. The wagon, itself was showing 280k on the cluster so the radio was well-used and it was original to the car (the VIN yielded the radio code). So that's my suggestion--look for a SC-811. It seems to be a cheap replacement, especially at $16 at PaP :)

As for fixing it... I took mine apart but don't know anything about identifying bad individual electrical components. Again, for $16 it was worth it to get a used one.
