When i start my beloved 850 up its starts then dyes straight away and when i give it some throttle it dyes quicker. I think it could be the fuel pump because the humming noise from the back is no longer there when i put the ignition on. am i correct or way off the mark?

The problem may be a faulty fuel pump or fuel pump relay. Both repairs and diagnosis are covered in this forum. Here's a couple links to get you started:

Try jumpering the fuel pump relay to see if it will run continuously. It sounds like it could be a fuel pump relay, since it IS starting if I'm reading correctly. If it starts, runs, and then CHOKES and dies, it may be an air or vacuum problem.
