Checking codes

This seems to be a really obvious question, but how does one check codes? Is it necessary to purchase an expensive piece of equipment to check the codes?

Autozone will do it for you for free. The cheapest code readers go for around 50$. I saw some today in Home Depot and I assume they are also sold at other national chain hardware stores. Amazon.com has good prices. Once you have one, pry off the cover labeled "OBD II" under the liftable portion of the middle console, insert the cord that will come with the code reader into the port, and write down the code(s) you see. A list of what the codes mean can be found on volvospeed, are you can post it on the forum here and someone will know.

WHat year is your car? if it's 1995 or older it will have an obd 1 port under the hood that will give you the abitity to read your codes without an expensive code reader, 96 and up require an obd 2 code reader.
Search reading obd1 codes in this forum if your car is in the age bracket. I believe it's in the repair database. http://volvospeed.com/CheckEngine.php

My car is a '95. I just went out to read the codes.

Hole A1 was empty (nothing physically in the hole)
A2 was a 1-1-1
A3 was 2-1-1, 2-1-2, 2-1-3, 2-1-4, 1-4-1, 1-4-2
A5 was also physically empty
A6 was 1-1-1
A7 was 1-2-2, 1-1-3, 2-3-1

B1 was empty
B2 was 1-2-2
B5 was empty
B6 had no reading

A3 ABS
211- Left front wheel sensor, not signal on moving off
212-Right front wheel “
213-left rear wheel “
214-right rear wheel “

141- Faulty pedal sensor, shorted to ground or supply
142- Faulty brake pedal switch, open or short

A7
122- Temp. sensor interval too short

113-Fuel gauge open circuit
231-

So here is what I got from the readings. Would any of those error codes cause the car to not start? Also, why would my car ('95 volvo 850 glt) have nothing in holes A1 and A5?

Clear all of the codes and then see which ones come back. Write those down and look in the repair database which has a list of what the codes mean. That will give you an idea of what might be wrong. If you need additional help don't hesitate to post back here.
