Just replaced headliner in Wagon

Post by schigara »

And it was a pain! Getting the headliner shell out was easy enough but getting the new material to fit in the concave areas was quite difficult And cutting out for all the holes took forever.

It was hanging down in the left rear seat area and bugged me so I had to change it. I had changed a few headliners before in much smaller cars so I thought a few hours would get it done. It took a few more hours than I thought.

Of course, I could not find the same material but did manage to find a spot on match in color in the same material that is being used in most new cars. It cost me $47 for 3.5 yards of headliner and $60 for 3 cans of 3m Super Trim Adhesive #08090. I tested the glue with a small piece first. I sprayed the glue on both surfaces, waited 15 minutes and then stuck the test piece to the headliner shell and waited an hour. After an hour I tried pulling it off and the fabric ripped away from the foam backing. This was the right glue.

Everything came apart easy except for the visor hangers. They snap in and the only way I found to remove them, even after getting one out, is to just pull on it very hard and hope it doesn't break. Luckily neither one broke.

Has anyone here paid to have a wagon headliner replaced? I am curious to know what they would charge to pull the headliner shell and replace the fabric.

Also, has anyone purchased or inquired about the moon roof opening trim? This is the piece that secures and trims the headliner. I want to replace mine as it is a bit dingy.

My next job will be to replace the headliner on the moon roof cover but I will wait a few days on that job.

You did a top notch job on that, hope , mine looks that good when I do it. Did you use all of the adhesive or can you do it with less than 3 cans?

Thanks.

On a sedan, 2 cans would be plenty. On a wagon, 3 cans was stretching it. I wished I had had 4 cans. To get good coverage, you have to make 2 passes on each surface and I had to run it light in the flat areas. In the high stress/concave areas, I put it on a bit thicker.

Ive been quoted anywhere from 120- 600$ for my 850 sedan. for the moonroof panel and roof. 800 if i wanted genuine volvo... I think for a 680$ break id go with the non volvo material. lol

BTW NICE JOB!!!! haha how much to do it to my car? Haha.

Actually, for a sedan. Would you say its easy for the average joe to do in his driveway on a sunny day, or should i just shell out the 120?
I can get the 3m cans of spray from work since we use them ALOT

For $120, I'd pay to have it done. Scrubbing off the old foam is a hassle and nasty.
