Auto box problems.

Post by T5PAULW »

Hi folks, this site is great!
my first post so be gentle :) .
I have a 2000 T5 AUTO, 179k miles on the clock. Full Volvo service history (last service 174K). I bought the car a couple of weeks ago.
I am having an intermittant problem with the gear box, hopefully someone out there may have come across this before.
Gear change up and down (and in manual) is nice and smooth up until the i presume the gearbox is warm. The car will apparently drop out of gear, the engine will rev and then the gear will engage with a thump. Now this only seems to occur after slowing down to take corners or roundabouts or on inclines I.E. brack, turn and accelerate, car revs and then picks up in gear with a thump. This is intermittant.
Now i am not sure the last time the transmission oil was changed, the last reciept i can find it itemised was 114K. I am planning to check the levels tomorrow and do an empty and refill to see if this eliminates the problem.
Any thoughts anyone??

regards Paul

Mine's done that a few times. Basically, I think it's a solenoid that's old and gets stuck when the car's downshifting that essentially leaves it in neutral. I changed the fluid to Mobil-1 ATF (which I think helps keep things cooler in there), and I haven't had any problems since. See what color the transmission fluid is...hopefully a flush will help your problems.

thanks for the quick reply!
Not sure at the moment whether to flush or just change out going on other threads this could be detrimental to the older gearbox. Will see what colour the oil is in the morning...thats providing i can get the right grade replacement oil :)
Anybody got anything further to add or previous experience?

Paul

If it's been done before (you say you had records), then go ahead and flush it til it runs out red again. You'll probably need about 10 qt or so. It's usually if it's questionable that it has been done with a lot of miles on the transmission, as a caution, everyone advises you to just do a drain and fill several times.

Just KEEP IT AWAY from the evil transmission flush machines. Doing it yourself is more...fun...anyway
