Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

It sounds like you have a large air lock in the system.

When you replaced the radiator did you set the heater control to max heat before draining the system, leaving it there whilst refilling the system very slowly?

You may find the easiest solution is to drain the system into a container, with the heater set as above, so you can re-use the coolant then refill it, very slowly, occasionally massaging the two radiator hoses to help expel air.
