PPC code CEM 1A64

Post by craig1104 »

I got a code yesterday on my PPC, it was CEM 1A64 and it corresponds to " Communication with DEM". Does anyone know what that means and what I need to do to fix it? One more thing the ABS light is on and the message says anti skid needs service.

update!

Bought and had installed a new DEM(differential electronic module) and it cleared the error. Now I am getting a BCM 0127 and BCM 083 error code. These errors are disabling the antiskid module. The codes are tilt sensor adjustment. Anyone have any ideas?

I'll take a stab here.

Tilt sensor to me sounds like what they call the "yaw-rate" sensor. For some reason we sell quite a few of those for the XC90's. Part number is 31110063. The codes you have are BCM codes, maybe it is a combination of both the yaw rate sensor and BCM itself. If your car is an 04 the BCM is also common, part number is 8671457. Hopefully it's just the yaw rate sensor.

UPDATE.... don't ask me why this happened.

After clearing the code for the tilt sensor it would stay clear until I turned the car off and a few times. The fault would show up the next time I started the car, over night or after getting out of work. I did this a few times and the same thing would happen, so I stopped clearing the code.

A day after I stopped clearing them the code cleared it self and never came back.... go figure.

Not to hijack the thread but I have an 04 XC90 that I just took in because the AWD wasn't working. The mechanic said the DEM needed to be replaced. I was quoted ~$1800, $1500 for the module and $250-300 for labor. Does this sound fair?

don't mind at all, hope to help out.
well, first of all buy your module from these guys, they will charge you $1080 plus $10 shipping. they are awesome, bought a few parts from them they are a volvo dealer and will ship you Volvo parts. Take your xc90 to a dealer and have them install it, it should take an hour and then software to program it. all together it should cost less than $250.

Good luck

By these guys, who were you referring to? I didn't see a link or phone number in your post. Thanks for your help!

BTW: Is it normal for the DEM module to fail and not get an message at the dash? The only reason I noticed my AWD wasn't working is because I had a suspicion it wasn't working. So I had my wife watch the rear wheels when I was spinning my front tires and nothing. I recently had the CEM replaced because it failed. Could it be possible it wasn't reloaded properly?

I don't know what happened to the link, but if I were you and save some money on buying parts you may not need is to bring it to a dealer you trust and spend a hundred bucks and let them analyze the problem. There is so much that could be causing it. I had a light and a message indicating that the anti skid needed service.

for the dealer I used for the parts is listed on this website. Darrell Waltrip from Tenn. It's listed under recommended sites.

Not to be insulting, but not all XC90's are AWD. :) I am not sure about the CEM but I know I had to purchase software for the DEM after intallation and have it programed.

Craig,
I know all XC90's aren't AWD  I DO know mine is though because I have physically seen my AWD components when I was under my car doing an oil change. I do trust the mechanic I sent it to I was just looking for a second opinion. The more I look into this, the more I see that this is more of a common problem than I originally thought.
