hello,

i recently bought a 99v70 xc awd as well and it is in the shop for the O2 sensor. I wanted to replace it myself but didn't get a solid answer about its location even with the pics. it is going to cost me 100 bucks to replace it...

anyway, my question is, is this car awd at all times or is there any button or something you choose to drive 2wd or awd like in the other trucks?

i have got the same seat problem, passenger side doesn't move. can you show us where that circuit breaker is?

thank you...

It is AWD at all times...it is mainly FWD biased as opposed to a truck or Jeep 4WD system, but it will transfer power to any wheel as necessary if others are slipping. The system on your '99 is purely mechanical as opposed to more sophisticated AWD systems out there now - make sure you change the bevel gear & trans. fluid and don't mix & match tires and it will be happy.

If the old AWD are anything like the new ones then its 95% power to front wheels and 5% to the back under normal driving conditions. The ratio changes as the situation calls for it. Also keep in mind that AWD means 4 wheel drive all the time, there is no choice of whether you turn it on or off. 4WD like on trucks, SUV's, etc, means you can choose between 2WD and 4WD.

How do I change the bevel fluid? I already changed the trans fluid. It made a world of difference. no more overdrive chatter and banging going into drive and reverse.

Woot! I'm glad that worked!

Here's a great write-up someone else did on the bevel gear.

The document lists 1 liter of 1161648 Volvo fluid. You should use full synthetic 75W90 gear oil in it, which I'm pretty sure off the top of my head I remember seeing at Autozone or any store like that.

Regarding your cargo net, pull the net out of the wider seat back (right side) and pull on the driver's side of the rod. It will slide out and hook in the fitting above the window. Then pull the net out of the other seat back and you'll see that it hooks onto the exposed portion of the rod...........Re: AWD, my 2000 XC has a button behind the shifter marked with a "W". I believe it gives more positive traction to the rear wheels for icy road surfaces than in normal mode. I've had no use for this feature out here in Cali though but it looks like you'll be putting it to use this month.

@sorenmail thanks so much. I feel a little dumb not figuring that out but I am enlightened now. Can't wait to give it a try, though too cold to venture out again tonight.

BTW I made ample use of the W mode during the snow storm this weekend. Works great.

Just don't use W mode too much or you'll burn up your transmission

It starts the car off in 3rd gear, which helps you get started on hills without spinning tires, but it's hard on the torque converter. If you're not stuck, don't use it - mine will take off very well in snow with a light foot on the gas.
