Black retaining ring that holds the fuel pump

I'm trying to change a fuel pump on a 1998 V70. How do I remove the black retaining ring that holds the fuel pump onto the gas tank.

I used a rubber oil filter strap. Its tricky but it worked eventually.
Ambitious but rubbish

I bought the oil filter pliers, and it came right off. Now my fuel pump seems to be OK, see "Fuel delivery problem."
