subtle, hi-pitched whine (whistle) from engine...???

I have a 95 GLT 850 wagon - nonturbo with an automatic transmission, 98K miles. I just noticed a very hi frequency/pitch whine from the engine. It will rise/fall with rising/falling engine rpm and happens in drive (moving down the road) or in neutral with the car stopped. It seems to be more obvious at lower speeds and may not even exist at hiway speeds.

Could it be the distributor shaft bearing/bushing? Does the tranny have a governor that would cause this? It might even be a normal noise - it's relatively faint - could it be air passing by the t-body? Thanks very much for any help. I haven't had a chance to isolate it yet, but will go under the hood with a stethoscope soon.

When I bought the car, the owner had been running 20-50 weight oil in the car (have no idea why - seems wrong) so I switched back to 10-30 weight. Not sure if this is realted, but don't recall hearing the noise when I recently test drove this vehicle.

Mine does this when the car is cold for a few minutes into driving and its only at low to mid rpms. Turns out it's either the serp belt tensioner pulley or the idler pulley(one of the two for the belt). Check those as that's an easy fix.

Thanks for the information - the sypmtom sounds about right and the noise is coming from the drivebelt side of the engine. Thank you.
