965 1994 A simple question

I picked up this nice car a couple weeks ago at an insurance auction. Broken tail light and a small wrinkle (4"x6") in the right rear panel. Got it with 83,000 miles on it and it runs like a top, save for my previous question about the turn signals. My question is what the heck is a 965 model? I have never seen one before and do not know what it means. Thanks!

I believe the 965 designation breaks down as follows:

9 - Volvo's luxury RWD Sedan/Wagon
6 - 6 cylinder engine
5 - 5 doors, counting the rear hatch door (a station wagon or "Estate" for our friends across the pond

)

This reminds me that Volvo's model desginations once made sense, compared to their current "alphabet soup" naming convention.

Or as one Volvo salesman said when the designations were changed and I was looking at a Volvo 200, "It's a series 2 but you can't get in because it has no doors and even if you did get in it hasn't got an engine. Some *@*%*$* whizkid at Volvo must have had a brainstorm."
