S40, '01 rear brakes

Post by Volvotex »

I'm replacing the rear pads and have a problem getting the calipper to collaps for the new pads. Is there a trick to doing this on the car? Or do I have to place it in a vice?

This needs a special tool which you can see here.

You can do the job other ways but it depends on what is in your tool kit. The trick is to get pressure onto the piston whilst turning it back in. Placing it in a vice wouldn't work as you wouldn't be able to turn it. I have seen it done using a tyre iron in the slot and a reasonably strong assistant holding the caliper.

I did mine yesterday I used a G clamp and the tool that changes blades on a 12 inch angle grinder.
apply a small amount of pressure with the clamp to the piston and then locate the tool in the slots on the piston and turn it clockwise, you should find as you turn the piston the tension will come off the clamp so you will need to keep applying pressure to the clamp, the piston eventually bottoms out. It is fiddly so be patient.
