Back-up lights don't light 240 Auto, 89"

Back-up lights fail to light. 89' 240 auto . Both bulbs are good. Switch under console shifter should turn them on when "Reverse" is selected. This switch also prevents start up in gear. How can I determine if this switch is bad before ordering another at considerable cost $$. ? The wires on this switch disappear under the carpeting. Is there a connector under there which would come with the new switch.??? Help.!!

This is NOT a reply...simply a notice to those that see my problem which I have solved myself. The reason my back-up lights did not work is because the printed circuit board inside the tail light assembly was corroded Therefore the multi pin connector that plugs onto the PCB could not make good contact to bring the +12 volts to the bulbs. I found a website called: www.vlvworld.com that not only carries the entire tailight asm. but also new Printed ckt. boards. Ordering the new PCB @ $19.88 will correct this corrosion proble.
