240 - 1992 - Leaks water into passenger side when turning

Post by Remy Virgo »

Hi, I have a 240 (just base, no GL or anything) made in '92.

I get this rattling/grating noise whenever I turn the car with the fan/AC on. It sounds like there's something brushing against the fan, but I have no idea how to check.

water also rarely and very small amounts sprays from the fan.

lately and more seriously, water has started leaking into the passenger side floor from the right side. It only happens when I take a corner.

The car has something in the realm of 286,000 km on it.

I bought it in Australia, I think it was made for the UK.

I don't think there are any mods, aside from stereo, and the interior is pretty banged up.

any help would be appreciated, I don't really have the cash to get it looked at by a professional.

thanks in advance!

hey, I just thought I should mention, I've done a little bit of research since posting and I think it's AC condensation. I tried to find the drain, but I couldn't see it. I have no experience at this so the more detailed the better!

thanks again

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

The rattling/grating noise coud be something that has got itself into the blower unit making contact with the blades or it could be caused by worn bushings causing the fan blades to contact the housing. Unfortunately, the 240 blower motor is one of the least accessible units on any car I have owned.

This link will take you to a site showing replacement of the blower motor on a LHD car. RHD is much the same.

The drain tube from the evaporator housing goes down through the floor. If you are going ahead to remove the blower motor you will be able to see the drain tube. If you are going to leave the motor you will need to get under the car and find it. Either way clean it out by using a thin plastic rod. A plastic knitting needle is ideal.

thanks for the help. I'll try and clear the drain see if that alone will help.
