Engine shut off when Gear shift to Drive

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Engine shut off when Gear shift to Drive

Post by Tim73 »

Please help !
1) My Volvo S80, 1999 having problem when shift gear from Park to D (drive) or 1, 2, 3 : The Engine Automatic shut off after that.
2) The gear shift from Park to R(reverse) is fine
3) The gear shift from Park to N(natural) is fine

4) Open the hood and check, seem like coolant is in the transmission; The Coolant bottle is milky and smell with transmission oil.

5) Check the Engine oil : Engine oil is clean, no coolant at all.
6) Check Engine light is on
7) Transmission service required

Before this happened, the car slow at STOP, stay on 3rd gear never goes to 4th gear.

8) Yesterday the car stop in the middle of the road, just got towed it home, will get my hand dirty this weekend.

9) I plan to flush the transmission fluid, change the Trans filter,
10) Thinking that the Transmission oil cooler line may leak from Radiator. If this is the case, I may consider by pass this with the After market Transmission Cooler.

**** BIG PROBLEM **** How do I reset the Automatic Engine shut off when gear shift to Drive ?

Please help with any suggestions.

Thank you very much

If the wall between the radiator and transmission cooler has broken, pretty much more or less your transmission's probably shot. Hate to say it, but definately try flushing it and see if you can get it to work again.

I'm not sure why it would just instantly cut off in drive, unless the torque converter's stuck in the lock-up position. What happens if you rev it a bit in neutral (~3000 rpms) and then drop it into drive?

This guy temporarily ran a piece of tube between the transmission cooler ports to keep the antifreeze from mixing in again, which is something you could probably do on yours too before you spend $ on a new radiator and don't know if your transmission will even work:

HI Jablackburn,
I flush the transmission, when the fluid is drained out almost all of it then the transmission can shift to D, 3,2,1 without problem. I mean the engine now stay running without shut off. As soon as I put more fluid into it ( about 4 to 6 quarts. The problem comes again., engine turns off when change to D.
Do not know what is going on. Please help with any suggestion

THank you very much

That's really strange. The only explanations I can think of to explain that behavior are:

1) One of the internal transmission pumps are acting up (I still don't know why this would stall it, though)
2) Torque converter lock-up solenoid is stuck. Low fluid causes not enough pressure for the torque converter to engage.

It sounds like good news that the transmission is still shifting, and it's possible that all you may need to do to get her working again is replace a solenoid. Have you tried reading codes from the OBDII port? Sometimes the car will actually give you an idea of what is wrong with it.

My answer is only a guess though - I have no idea what replacing a solenoid on an S80 transmission entails as it is entirely different from the AW used in the 850/S70 models.

I got the error codes from the car:

1) P0753 : Shift Solenoid A Circuit Electrical
2) P1618 Manufacturer Specific : NOT sure what does this mean ?
3) P0758: Shift Solenoid B circuit Electrical
4) P0748: Press. Control Solenoid A circuit Electrical

It seems to be an Electrical problem: either the wiring harness inside the Power trans, or the TCM board has a shot circuit somewhere.

Please give any suggestions, advice.
1) How do I make sure all these Electrical connection to these solenoids are good/bad ?
2) What is the Resistant values and where to measure these connection ?

Important question: Can I used different TCM from other car : Volvo 850, Grand Prix, GM Transmission's TCM.

Will the Dealer reprogram the TCM if I bought 1 used from Ebay or Junk yard ? How much it cost or it is free ? is there a RECALL on this problem ?

My car is: 1999 Volvo S80 2.9, Non Turbo.
US transmission. I am not sure it is GM or FORD ?

IS THERE anywhere I can find the binary file for TCM flash ? any schematics ?

The trans is a GM 4T65EV.

The dealer probably would not program anything you bought somewhere else, and they certainly won't do it for free.

If you google gm 4t65ev you should get lots of info on the trans. It was used in a lot of GM cars.
