Speedometer cable

I have a 1990 Volvo 740 Turbo and I need to know two things: My Speedometer doesnt work but everything else on the dashboard does so I think I need a new cable. Is this a mechanical Speedometer or Electrical? Also where do I install it behind the dashboard or do I have to pull the transmission?

Your car has an electric speedo triggered from a "tone ring" or toothed wheel inside the differential. Your problem is probably either a dirty sensor, a faulty sensor or a damaged wire from the sensor to the speedo.
