You don't need to disconnect the battery...at least I didn't and everything worked out fine.

I finally found the solution to the problem I was dealing with on page four of this thread. It was the new blower fan I had purchased from FDP Groton. The blower was short circuiting internally and blowing the 25 amp fuse. I made a quick call to Mike, their sales manager, and he two day UPS'ed me a new one free of charge (since I was going on vacation with the car). The new one has worked fine for the last two weeks... problem solved. I had a tough time solving this problem because I kept assuming the new blower was a good one.

Hey every one. i just got my first volvo and omg it rocks.Best ebay win ever. 850 GLT. As I paid only $650 for it (it is straight and sunroof works!), there are obviously little things I need to deal with.

I get the 20 sec flashing lights on the ECC at start up, and after reading through all of this wonderful info, I figure first place I should start is the blower unit under the passenger side dash. Would that be correct? I have no fan at all. Other option is to pull out the ECC and check it for obvious circuit faults. Thoughts please!

The vehicle is a 93 850 GLT with ECC unit.

The best thing to do is to read the codes for the climate system and then fix w/e is broken. Try starting a new thread, you'll get more responses that way. :D

The blower in my 1996 850 makes a slight squeal when ever I go around a corner.

A friend of mine who drives a 740 said it was no biggie and was probably just a little loose.

Do any of you all experience this?

Is it trying to tell me to fix it?

Very nice write up!

When it starts to squeal on corners it is a sign that the lower bearings are dry. Left unrepaired it will ultimately take out your blower resistor (MCC) or the power stage (ECC). Lubricating the bearings will buy you time.

Which wire harness would do the trick to disable the blower. Thanks for the help and informative website.
Just pull the fuse for it. It's either 5 or 31 (or both) in your car, depending on which climate control system you have. Look at the fuse diagram under the hood to confirm.

Sorry, I just edited your post instead of replying with my own and can't get it back now

Anyway, lonesomerogue, to answer your original question, if you want to put off running it for now, just pull the fuse for it (or set the fan speed to 0). It's either 5 or 31 (or both) in your car, depending on which climate control system you have. Look at the fuse diagram under the hood to confirm.

Great write up and info on the blower motor issue.

My recently acquired '95 850T's blower would start with the car and usually die within 30-60 sec. It would run quite a bit longer on cold cold evenings, nights and mornings but it is starting to get a lot warmer now.

Got a new motor and resistor from the bone yard. A Volvo die hard guy there suggested it may only be the resistor....well swapped the resistor out first and the motor just purred along happily. Same procedure to get to the resistor but a lot less work just swapping it and leaving the motor alone. So unless your motor is making a lot of noise or such, you might try swapping the resistor first.
