What does the down load do. In other words, what does deactivating this do for my car??jablackburn wrote:Bullcrap. Jeep says the same thing, and the fluid in ours was BURNT. They just want your money when the transmission blows up. Either take it to another dealer, or find a good independent Euro mechanic that will do it for you, or do it yourself - it's really not hard, I promise.Keep it far away from transmission flush machines - they are very very bad evil things.
If the transmission download has not been done on your car to deactivate the stop-neutral function, find someone that can do this as soon as possible. This in itself ends up killing most 2001 transmissions.
We have a write-up for the transmission flush method here.

Your car will use the JWS-3309 fluid, not the Dex-III that S70's use, that you can buy from your dealer. Alternatively, the Mobil or Toyota fluids are acceptable if you can find them.
Ive heard the thing about the Toyo fluid here before. Which one??

The Toyota fluid is called Toyota T-IV and is available at any Toyota dealer for 5 or 6 bucks a quart. Mobil 3309 is available most likely through an online source and will probably run you 8-12 bucks a quart plus shipping. Volvo fluid is pricey and in my opinion I don't know why anyone would use it when cheaper alternatives that are just as good are available. The spec you are trying to meet is JWS 3309 for your transmission, any of the above fluids will do this.
The "what is Volvo fluid and is it synthetic? question comes up often and is much debated. From what I have read and what I choose to believe the Volvo fluid is not synthetic and is no better or worse than the Toyota or Mobil fluids that meet the JWS 3309 spec. The only difference with the Volvo fluid is that the price at most dealers begins around $17 per quart and I have heard of others charging more.
The Toyota T-IV and Mobil 3309 fluids are not synthetic. There have been people claiming that Mobil 1 is now offering a synthetic fluid that claims to meet the 3309 spec, but I have no idea on this one. I personally like the Toyota fluid which works well and keeps some $$ in my pocket.

A 2001 has a "stop-neutral" feature that bumps the transmission into neutral when slowing down to a complete stop. The idea was to help save gas and wear and tear on the transmission. In reality, it ends up destroying the transmissions and wearing out solenoids when it engages again and again after a stop.
The software update simply disables that feature, and (I believe) updates the 2-3 shift to make it a little smoother.

Jablackburn, did the 2004 Volvo's still have this neutral-stop function?
I requested the price for the software-update and the dealer didn't know what I was on about (even though my spec-list from Vadis appears to have this software listed, see pic, assuming this is the dreaded 'neutral function')

The gasoline versions from 2002-on did not have this feature; I can't imagine why they would put it with the diesels either. So in short, no.
The VADIS list goes across multiple years, so the update you're seeing is for a 2001 car

Possibly I should not have referred to it as the Vadis list. This is a list that specs all items my car did (and did not) come equipped with according to the system at a Dutch Volvo dealer after typing in my license plate (license plates are locked to a car for its life, no such thing as personalised plates here).jablackburn wrote:The gasoline versions from 2002-on did not have this feature; I can't imagine why they would put it with the diesels either. But by the sound of it, chances of me having this feature are slim.
Good news! As this means I don't have to get it reprogrammed.
Bad news as this means this will not partly solve my slow acceleration issue...
Thank you for your answer!
