More problems with the 940
So, I posted some time ago about a 940 that wouldn't start and it turned out to be the filter. Now it is seemingly doing the same thing(4 months later) and it is definitely not the filter this time. What it does now is start and die, start and die. If it sits for a while it will start and idle for little bit and die. Oddly enough, after it sat for 24 hours I started it and continued to idle, probably 5 minutes or so. Then I shut it off and re started it 3 or 4 times just fine then it went into the start and die mode I was mentioning earlier. I was thinking of the in-tank pump or maybe the screen around it.......ideas? I un-hooked the mass air sensor wire to see if that made a difference and it did not, so it is all hooked up. A Volvo mechanic told me if the Mass Air Sensor is bad you can tell by unhooking it and seeing if it will start.......the replacing it of course

Can you hear the in-tank pump when you switch on the ignition? The best way to hear it is to remove the filler cap, put your ear near the filler and have someone switch on. You will only hear it momentarily if the engine doesn't fire.

So I took all the stuff off in the back so I could get to the access hole to the pump/fill. I unhooked all the stuff from it and jumped 12 volts and a ground to the pink(hot) and the black(ground) and no gas came out and heard nothing running. Pretty much tells me the pump is toast. I was thinking I should be able to get the whole thing out of the tank with out removing it, but there seem to be to much stuff attached to the whole sha-bang to get it out with the small hatch provided. The manual says to drop the tank too.
Let you know how it goes.

Which manual? Personal experience and VADIS say it comes out through the inspection hatch. The manual says to drop the tank too.

The manual I got was Chilton. I was not very hip on the manual as it is one of those that cover all the cars in one manual, but it is all that was available where I live. Naturally I tried to remove the unit through the inspection hatch. It didn't seem to matter which way I rotated it, there wasn't enough room to remove it. So out came the tank and the unit is out now.

So I got the 940 station wagon running good again. Both fuel pumps were toast. The one in the tank was probably toast some time ago and the one under the driver was doing all the work. I installed pumps from Autozone parts house. The one for the tanks looked exactly the same and fit like a glove. The one under the driver(high pressure)looked to be a universal application and fit with rubber sleeve to make it the right diameter for the clamp. Had to do a little wiring change as the OEM terminals would not hook up. Runs fine though.
Thanks for the help.

When you purchase electric fuel pimps you should purchase one with a limited lifetime warranty. When I drove an 84 VW Jetta, the fuel pump went out. I purchased one from Autozone and it worked for 14 months. The warranty was for 12 months. I bought the replacement one with a lifetime warranty from Carquest. The difference in price was about double. $69.99 compared to $138.99
