940 Turbo 1992 Condensor collar

Post by p0shr »

The forward collar on the air conditioner condenser has turned gray. Is this a sign that the condenser is bad?

Welcome to matthew's Volvo Site.

I'm not sure which collar you are referring to. Can you post a picture?

If the AC is still working the condensor is good.

The collar is the first one you see behind the pulley.
I removed the belt because I was told the condenser would shortly freeze up with use.
Will see if I can get a picture.

I think you are referring to The A/C compressor. The part behind the pulley is the clutch. Removing the belt was a good idea. If you want your A/C to work and the A/C clutch is bad you will need to replace the clutch.

Compressor with pulley and compressor clutch assembly. That one is seized, I bet. Sure looks like it got really hot!
I think the clutch assembly is available seperately, otherwise replace the whole compressor and clutch assembly. Was the A/C working ok before all this?

Yes, she was working fine as far as I could tell. It was the mechanic who decided to remove the belt.

If you reach down there and try to turn that pulley, with the engine off of course, does anything rotate?
I'm guessing he took it off because there was alot of smoke , right?

I'll check but he didn't mention smoke.
Also, I try to turn it (with the engine off).

I reached down, grabbed the gray collar and turned it with my hand. It and the pulleys behind it turned easily but not loosely.
