'95 850 Emissions Test

Post by wdckwrth »

Got the notification that I need to go in for a MD emissions test. The form says they do all cars up to '95 with tailpipe but I was wondering if they can do it with the OBD since this is (after all) an "ahead of the times" Volvo. Thanks.

Since you have an NA - per your sig - you likely only have OBD-I capability. The '94 and '95 turbos have OBD-II capability.
Thank God I am not where you are but it sounds like you will need to do a tailpipe test. I would have several miles on the highway to get the car good and warm before I went in for the test.

This might be a myth but it hasn't failed me yet...try filling up with premium gas before you go in. Like Lee said, get her warmed up as well. Good luck!

On my 96 they do the emission test through the OBD II interface. I wonder they wouldn't do it for yours...

Thanks guys.

My 850 is NA and it does have the OBD-II port right in front of the gear shift. My assumption is that if the car has the OBD-II port they will use it no matter the year of the vehicle. Wheelsup has that been your experience in NC or have they stopped doing emissions testing there? I am going to run it good before I go in.

Well I am currently in NC but have FL tags, FL doesn't do inspections. So I actually haven't ever brought my Volvo in to do an inspection. My wife on the other hand has a '98 VW Jetta and when they check the emissions in NC they just check if there is a CEL on.

However you can call an inspection station I'm sure they will tell you what the procedure is. If you have a 95 and down in NC, I believe they did away with the tail pipe test a few years ago. Of course, other states will vary.
