Front door window track R&R (problem with Volvo part)

Post by wheelsup »

I replaced my front drivers window track today, it was clunking while opening and closing the door. The track has a bracket that broke due to what looks like metal fatigue and replacing it was harder than it needed to be. I suppose I could've gone to a junkyard but called around and none in my area had what I needed and one even charged a $50 minimum...so instead I bought it from the dealer for $22.

First I took the door panel off, it comes out very quickly and easily. The access to the track is behind the black plastic insert near the back part of the door above the handle arm mechanism.

Looking inside the door, the red outlines the window track:

To take the track out it requires one torx be removed:

Once that is removed you can pull the track down from the window trim liner itself. In my case that torx bolt just held the bracket...and the track had already fallen down into the door.

You can see old vs. new. Immediately you notice the new track doesn't have the nut welded into place, which is odd it came from the dealer like that, and I double checked it was the right part for my model year. No idea why Volvo makes them like that...

To get the new track to work I didn't have any nuts that were that size, so I re-used the old bracket. Also there isn't much room in the door so maneuvering a ratchet back that would be tough, this method is "self tapping".

Here's a test fitting:

I taped the bracket on in order to install it. You basically have one shot, if the old bracket fell down into the door it would be lost forever.

Here it is lined up after putting it in, I just re-used the old torx bolt that I took off and added some loctite onto it.

Hopefully this helps someone else, it took me awhile to figure out how it was installed, I couldn't find it in the Haynes. I know there is a lot of talent on this board and you guys can do it with with your eyes closed but it took me an afternoon! :)

I have a gut feeling I am going to have to do this soon, as my window is making a loud clunk sound *almost like dropping* once it is all the way down in the door...

But I could be wrong, Any ideas>

Had the same issue about a month ago. Seems like those tracks have a built in lifespan.
Wish I had your picks then, it would have made my life a lot easier at the time. Anyway I went the cheap way out and mig welded mine back together and reinstalled.

BTW: Nice job on the write-up

Hi,
I just came across this. I had a similar problem in that the screw fell out so the little inner track fell out and the window wouldn't shut but I thought the problem with my window not shutting right was the seal that lines the track. I got a new (used) seal, pulled the old one out and discovered the problem was that the track had come out. Anyway, now I have to put the seal back in as well as the little track. It seems like I have to pull the window out to put in the track liner seal (right?). Does anyone have any idea what's the best way to pull the window or should I try and re-install the track seal with the window in place? The main issue seems to be getting the seal to line the track thats in the front of the car.

Thanks so much in advance. This forum is the best.

"the never ending list" I'd say "the every time growing list"

So this happened to me today :( and sorry to ask if it seems ridiculous but... How did you removed all the panels to get to the window mechanism?

Thanks in advance.
