850 Stalling Issues - More so in hot weather

Post by Frails »

So my 94 850 has been stalling everytime I try to start it after a trip. In other words, I drive to a store, when I come out, it won't start for at least five minutes, then starts right up. If it sits long enough, it will start so no quick stops for me.

I live in AZ and it's over 100 degrees now. Today, when I came out to my car after work it would not start. It basically will not catch, just chug. So I waited 2.5 hours for the sun to go down some and it to cool a little (yeah right!). Well it started right up. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!!! The body and interior of this car is pristine! I do not want to get rid of it. I have read in numberous posts that the fuel pump and/or relay are the culprits to many stalls. Could this be heightened by temperature?

Maybe it's vapor lock. Does it do it only on short trips or after long trips as well? I had a Ford that did exactly the same thing once, and it turned out to be a tiny vacuum leak. Just an idea. Probably the Volvo has something weirder going on!

No it really doesn't matter. When it was cooler out, I could drive to the corner store (1 mile) in the morning, run in for a minute and it would start again. Anything trip longer than that and no start right away. Whatever it is, is definitely affected by temperature. But remember that I live in AZ and it's 110 right now so most cars would be.

There is a small offwhite hose with a black elbow fitting that has broken off. Maybe a vacuum line? I'm changing the fuel pump relay anyway as it resides in the engine compartment which could explain why the car needs to sit a while before restarting. It has stalled on teh freeway as of late and once or twice at stop lights.

That broken off hose/elbow sounds like something to fix. Another possible cause:

Especially if it stalls out under ALL conditions (idling and while moving) and takes a while to restart the engine after the engine is warm.
