Vacum Leak

My Check Engine light came on, Off to the dealer expecting the worst,After the compulsory computer hookup the answer was
a vacum leak.. New gas cap was to resolve the problem,it did for a well..The check engine light has come on 3 more times..
Same story Vacum leak,And each time the compusory computer hookup.$$$$!!. they now say I will require a smoke test
to find the leak.More $$$!! Its a V70 with 120K not miles.. Any one had this problem

The vacum leaks it a common failure on volvos with some years on the shoulders...Specially on turbos due the heat of engine compartment all the hoses became cracked al let vacum leak came... You have to start checking one by one the hoses , start near the intake manifold..buy some meters of 6 mm (check your correct diam) vacum hose at a spare parts shop..replace all the hoses that looks cracked, dried..

with a little patience you can find the cracked one...

what was the code they gave you? The J hose that attaches to the charcoal canister is a common failure.

The dealer did not give or tell me the code number, what is bothering me is that it is intermitent,its fine for a month
and then the engine light comes on again,It reads Vacum leak on the computer each time.Could the canister hose do this?

go to autozone and have them read the codes for free and write them down.

Yes, that J hose commonly cracks at the curvature and can give you intermittent codes.

So what is the problem besides the CEL coming on? Gas mileage?
I think its p0440 or some thing close to that. I haven't notice that much of a difference in the way the car runs.

Hello, The DEALER took your money and didn't tell you the code? It wasn't on the bill? You're guessing at the source of a vacuum leak. Get a damn code reader and save money right away. IF it's a J hose the number will be P0442. You can fix them with the help of the great posting on Volvoforums.com, as I just did. Repeatedly paying for the use of a $30 to $170 tool is nuts. Worse than that, they won't even talk to you. Even if you don't do any fixing yourself you can, at least, start a service conversation with a code. Kira

JUST TO FOLLOW My dealer tested for the calcum leak,yes it was the J hose however they want $329.00 to replace this $0.29 hose Plus lets not forget the 2 clamps..The dealer says the exhaust system ,plus a panel,plus,plus,plus,is why it cost so much,GREAT VOLVO DESIGN ... Has anyone done this on there V70?

yes, it can be done by a DIY. I have seen the post about but I can't find it now. Do a search on J hose repair.

By the way, stop wasting your money at the dealer by having them read the codes. By a decent $100 code reader, is money well spent and pays by itself the next time the CEL ligt comes on.
