1993 850 overheating
My '93 volve 850 (200k miles) started overheating in the middle of a traffic jam today. I got it to a service station where they overcharged me for looking at it and putting in a new thermostat. on the way home it overheated a couple more times. It seemed that the shorter the trip, the more likely it was to overheat and that the longer the haul the less likely, or at least the longer it took to do so. The thing is, it's not leaking anything and there's no mix of fluids in the oil, so I don't think it's a gasket problem. My next step is to do a flush. I also guess that the water pump and radiator could be replaced but i'm not sure how much more i want to put into this. Any thoughts?

Go ahead and flush the radiator fluid. Has the water pump ever been replaced before? If not, 200k is around where it probably needs to be replaced anyways. Get one from FCP; should be around $75.

Also, when was the last time flushing, refilling was done? I'm still not sure if it matters whether or not you use "Volvo" antifreeze or standard ethlene glycol. I think I read where "Volvo" brand has more rust inhibitors so at the very least, you would have to flush and refill your AFmore often, say 1-2 years vs. 3 -4 yrs.
