It is the alternator - when it isn't charging the Battery, Brake, Coolant Level, Parking Brake, Washer Fluid, and Bulb Failure lights all come on and stay on.

The gas light may just mean that you are low on fuel for real - it is not a part of the system that ties in with the alternator.

Check all of the connections first but have it (the alternator itself) tested if the connections look OK.

Hey Lee, thanks for your input. I must agree that there is a situation involving the alternator...I had purchased a brand new battery and less than 72 hours later it is drained...there is a bit of noise coming from the serpentine belt so I am guessing it is not operating the alternator properly. The engine, transmission, alternator, starter, etc all came out of my son's 1997 GLT which was totaled in a parking lot incident. I stripped the car and sold most everything but was not getting a decent offer for the engine/transmission, so I bought another 850 that had a blown engine. So in a way I am in the dark on knowing what else might have been/be wrong with the 1996 but I do know everything from my 1997 was working just fine. Thanks again for all your input.

Chris

You have many things in motion here and without seeing the car it is tough to say what is going on. Start by checking the Red/White wire for continuity between the alternator and the instrument cluster.

Is there any chance you went between a Motronic 4.4 and a 4.3 with the engine swap? My cars are either the LH 3.2 or Motronic 4.3 but my newest 850 is a '96. I think the Motronic 4.4 kicked in during the '97 model year.

Hey Lee, I am quite sure that the 1997 engine is indeed the Motronic 4.4...our volvo mechanic assured us that as long as we had the ECU from the 1996 there would be no problem...is this the case or not?!

I am not real clear as to what you are running and how much of the donor car came to the "new" car. If you swapped the engine out between the manifolds and left all of the other sensors in place, intake side and exhaust side , it should be fine with the 4.3 ECU. If you tried to swap it with the LP turbo all bets are off but that wouldn't necessarily explain the charging problem.

What parts came from the old car to the new car? Did you make any wiring harness changes?

We did not make any alterations at all to the engine wiring harness. We stripped the 1997 engine from all its turbo components and replaced the manifolds with those from the the 1996. I will simply have to do some additional research and see if I cannot find out what 's going on. Many thanks again,
Chris
