Engine Mounts on 98 V70

Post by Volvo Newb »

Hey everyone this is my first post. I recently bought my first Volvo a 98 v70 with 150000 miles I took it to a couple of different mechanics (both "Volvo specialists"). On told me to replace the Right engine mount and the other told me I need to replace the front rear and right engine mount. I don't know who to believe and I don't have a lot of money to through around. There is a lot of engine vibration. How else can I check to see if i need to make these repairs. I have access to a garage with a lift is this a simple job that i can perform myself? Thanks for the help!

Welcome to MVS.

The right front motor mount - the one under the bottom of the harmonic balancer is a piece of cake and it is the most prone to failure next to the upper torque arm bushing.

Take a look at them. The front and rear motor mounts should have the motor off of the subframe if they are good.

The front mount IS the right side of the car so it depends on simantics
Jack it up, pry up or remove the right front wheel fender liner and there in your face will be the mount.
If you can pry it up (move it at all) with a pry bar, it's shot

It all depends on your emissions testing requirements. In my parts we don't do testing at all but if they tailpipe test in your area you may or may not be able to get by with an aftermarket unit.

Your OEM unit has a relatively large amount of platinum in it and, the last time I checked, recyclers will pay around $100.00 for a used (blown up) Volvo Cat. Check on eBay, they are often under $100.00 but they want the core.

Okay so I finally had a chance to take a look! If you are using the picture above. #1 is smashed and and I can only see one of the 2 bolts that go into the engine. Numbers 5 and 7 have white "something" all around them I am told that this is the fluid but I don't see where the fluid is coming from! So the plan is to do them all myself, is this outlined somewhere on this site? Also am I correct in finding the OEM parts are 7: Hutchinson, 5:Corteco 1:Lemforder?

Changing any engine mounts in any car is usually a straightforward business.

- Place a floor jack under the engine with a piece of wood in between as cushion.
- Gently jack the engine oil sump until it is snug and stop.
- Now gently jack it up maybe 1/2 inch to release pressure on the engine mounts.
- Replace one engine mount at a time for obvious reasons!
(The other engine mounts, although bad, still support the engine somehow).
You may as well do them all.
eeuroparts.com has the best prices.

Corteco, Hutchinson, and Lemforder are all good brands.
Stay away from Uro and Hamburg-Technic.

I orderd The front and rear parts on ebay from someone that said they were selling OEM mounts. When I got them in the mail they were Hamburg-Technic. Do they wear out quickly or do they cuase more vibration? They want to charge me a restocking fee and shipping so I don't want to have to send them back. Does anyone have experience with HT?
