Howdy,
I recently posted about a problem with my 1987 740 Turbo not shiftting from third to forth gear. Well, TAFinley, it works now! I ran a wire directly from the tranny solenoid straight to the battery just to check the functionality of the solenoid and gained forth gear! If no one scares me with dreary thoughts of dead or epxloding battery, I will run the weekend this way and rewire it through the headlight relay so that there will be no possibility of excessive drain on the battery. Once the solenoid does go out, I will be cutting a channel between the two holes(ON THE SOLWNOID< NOT THE TRANNY!) allowing for a constant flow of fluid, thereby fixing the problem once and for all. The only thing now is that it does not want to shift into third before shifting into forth. I have to rev the rpm's up to 3000, let off the gas a bit ans it goes right into forth. What can I say? Before I had to run it at 3500 rpm's to go 70 mph. A three hour trip there and another three back and one begins to see his car's life slipping away right before his eyes. If someone has an answer to this problem, GREAT!, but a short blast up to 3000 rpm's to go from second to forth is nothing in comparison to "THE FORMER FRUSTRATION!".
I would like to thank both TAFinley and Roger D. Scott for answering the call of a very grateful former VW Beelte & van fanatic who is now a tried and true blue fellow volvo aficionado. During the course of my love affair with Volkswagon I owned 10 beetles, 7 vans, 3 type II's, 2 Dashers, one of it's Audi clones, a 911 hatchback and a Rabbit. This is my first Volvo and I know it will not be my last. Is there a two door wagon somewhere down through the years? I have a uni-body pick-up truck conversion wresting around in the back of my head.
John, "WHO HAS FORTH GEAR!"
740 has a forth gear again!
