S80 ETM Cleaning How To

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Re: S80 ETM Cleaning How To

Was full of oil again this morning. My oil trap is not clogged. The PCV system is squeaky clean. It's like the oil just settles there from the thin film coating intake, slipping right past the ETM's butterfly valve and the other drain hole.

So if anyone can get me those four parts I'd really appreciate it and in return I'll do a photo write-up for this site. Here's the first picture.

EDIT: If I can't find the 2004 parts fairly soon -- I tried online sites and they all showed wrong 99-01 design for my 2003 :( -- I might just hack it myself. Think I can use a hole punch and reuse the stem from intake to relocate my existing hose to bottom of that rubber connecting piece. Then just need to find a bolt with same threads to plug old hole which doesn't seem to do anything anyways.

on these cars is it really recommended doing this ? given all the problems with etm's and also how fussy electronic TB's can be, i would think twice before doing this

Yes, cleaning the ETM (the new version) will make all of the difference in the world. Those carbon and varnish deposits on the butterfly valve dramatically affect the cars performance. A good cleaning will almost eliminate idle and hesitation problems.

I am not sure how the Volvo ETM is constructed but I have had problems in the past with cleaning fluids going through the throttle shaft and damaging the electronics such as the throttle position sensors. Pouring liquid into the throttle body is asking for problems. I will not "spray" the cleaner on the throttle plates. I put the cleaner on a cloth and then use it to wipe the carbon away. For stubborn deposits I use a plastic bristle brush such as a tool brush.

Two weeks ago I washed the engine of my wife’s 2005 Explorer (53K miles) with engine degreaser and a garden hose. The throttle position sensor went the next day. Coincidence? I don't think so.

Fluids and electronics do not mix.

Yesterday I pulled the ETM off my 2000 S80 2.9, not an easy job. And the starter coil is really close to where the socket handle is when removing the hose clamp from the bottom of the ETM, yes sparks flew the first time I started loosening it! Anyway, got it off and did the cleaning. It was nasty in there. Got it back on, just as much fun as taking it off. And it runs so much better! Now to check with my local Volvo dealer and see if I am still under the 10 year ETM replacement recall. With my luck I am one month over!

I have a T6 and it looks like an ugly job to get my ETM removed for a cleaning. Has anyone got tips to help me remove it? Do I have to take the inlet manifold off to get it out?

I removed the entire air cleaner housing, and the air inlet tube from the radiator area. I also removed the turbo hose running past the oil dipstick. I next removed the plastic tube from the inlet to the ETM. Removing the hose clamps works best with a ¼” ratchet and a socket, and is done by feel.

I used John's ETM cleaning procedure, but it made little to no improvement. However, when I removed the ETM I found something very odd. It had been damaged (impaled actually) in a way that could have only happened when removed, and in my opinion, it looks like it was done intentionally. I posted more information and photos at the link below.
If anyone has a comment or opinion I will appreciate it.

I finally got around to cleaning my ETM after replacing my spark plugs this past weekend. Since I had the turbo lines/hoses off for the plug change I figured I'm already half way to getting to the ETM. I was also lucky as the ETM lead was not wound behind the starter motor, indicating that it had been removed previously - or a lazy mechanic didn't route the cable back correctly after a starter motor replacement. Once removed, I discovered how filthy the insides here. Crud was caked on and it took me a good 30-45mins to get it clean with some short squirts of carb cleaner, cloth rag, wire and plastic brush. The car has never run so well since I bought it :)
