S80 noise when brake pressed at Park

Post by zg »

Hi, All,
I have had a S80 T6 for a week. Yesterday evening I found that whenever I press the brake peddle after I've started the car, there is a noise coming from under the shifter. I am sure the noise had not been there before. But this only happens when the shifter is in Park. And when I am driving everything is ok. Should I be concerned with this?
Thanks.

Sounds like the PNP switch, or whatever the S80's equivalent is called, is emitting less-than-strong electrical signals regarding its location. I wouldn't worry about it, but if it bugs you, you might want to move your shifter from P to L3 20 or 30 times and try to 'clean' the electrical contacts this way.

Hi, thank you very much for the repy.

I also found out that it happens in two other situations: when I turn the ignition key, or when I lift the brake at a stop sign. It sounds like some lock being released.
So what's the mechanism of this noise?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the mechanism is there to check that the trans is in Park before starting the engine, and to check that the brake is depressed before shifting from Park.

normal opperation the shift lock solenoid is engageing and dis engageing when brakeing at app 5mph the lock will release this is to prevent engagement of reverse while car is moving you will feel a slight clunk in the shifter
fun to drive
