What happens with the exhaust valves with the lower octane?

This can happen with lower-grade fuel:

Yupp, Justin's picture is worth a thousand of my words. The exhaust valves burn w/ lower octane fuel.

Edit: That piston is fubared pretty well. ;-) haha It would look awesome as a trophy.

I have ZERO compression on one of my cylinders...I think low grade fuel did this(87 Octane). I drive(drove) my 850 like an m3 or m5...very fast for long periods of time...I believe the high speed driving (100 mph + coupled with low grade fuel has killed one of my valves).

Engine is being swapped as I write this.

the volvo manual calls for a minimum of aki 87 octane but recomends aki octane of 91 or over (anti knock index)says optimum pertformance as per their design is achieved with aki of 91 and over,,,

aki 87 = ron 91

this is straight from the 1995 manual.... the choice should not be that hard

nadz wrote:I am just curious as to what fuel most people are using in their 850's, are you using regular or premium? I think the manual for my 1995 850 says to run high octane premium fuel but for the 1 year that I have had my car I always just put regular.
I was running reg. for awhile when I first got my '96 850 na (oct '09)....then in Jan. I switched to prem....It seems to be quite a bit happier with it.(doing some mileage checks now) I was getting 23.5 on reg.average around town and some short trips....I'll keep you posted on what's going on with premium
Promised mileage checks: after 2 fillups using premium; averaged 25.29 mpg....gained 1.79 mpg...normal driving.

My dad had my XC until about 115,000 miles and almost always used regular (87) and mid-grade(89)/premium(91) only if going on a longer trip. Since I've had it (25,000 miles later) only premium has been used (91 octane). It doesn't go any higher than 91 in California or Arizona that I've seen, and yet here many of you are talking about regular being something like 90. :?
