You CAN charge an empty car from the low side with no problems whatsoever if you know what you're doing.
I just did with about 4 S/V70s or 850s.
Use a gauge and listen carefully to the compressor.
if it stops "clicking" it's full, whatever you do 2 cans of R134 is enough. If completely empty that's 24 ounces and it should work just fine, (the 4 oz. doesn't make all that much of a difference if nothing else is wrong).
The actual total is 1.65 lbs

If there were moisture inside the system that was freezing up, refrigerant circulation would be blocked, the pressure would rise, and the high pressure swirch would trip...If the compressor is running but it is not cooling there are a lot of things that could be wrong but frozen "air" is not one of them...jablackburn wrote:*sigh*
Lets all agree to disagree. No one here is a genius, and no one here is an idiot.
The can in slightly warm water trick does work, I have done it myself. It's not going to explode unless you set it on fire or put it in 100+ degree water - I keep a can of it in my spare tire well, and it hasn't blown up. But this is besides the point.
If the AC works fine for a few minutes and the compressor is not clicking in and out every few seconds, your system is charged fine and you need to start looking at the clutch shims and/or thermal cut-out switch. If, on the other hand, you still hear the compressor running but aren't getting cold air, something (probably air) has got in the system and is freezing up and you'll need to have the system evacuated & recharged and replace your receiver/dryer.Problem is it blows cold for like 2 minutes and then gets warm. The can wasnt freezing up--- it wasnt even going in from what I could tell.

Justin +1 for the clutch gap fix. To the original poster, like Justin said, if it blows cold and then gets warm but you don't hear the compressor cycling on and off then you need to make the gap on the clutch smaller. I haven't looked into how it is done but I know there are a couple write ups in the repair database.

To clarify the correct charge amount, on a 2000 V70, the amount of R134a is 750 grams (aka 1.63 lbs or approx 28 ounces). I have the exact same car, 2000 V70 X/C. Below I attached a picture of the label from my hood. You can see where it says the 80 series cars (S80 I assume) call for the larger amount of refrigerant. The S/V/C70 requires less.

Yes, moisture is a part of air. The moisture in the system freezes, not the air itself. The moisture would get into the system from air. I thought that went along with what I said
This thread is getting terribly off track, which we do apologize for. I'm going to lock it for now. To the original poster, if you have any further questions, there's some good suggestions in here to get you started. Once you try some things if you still are having problems, feel free to start a new thread. We can always join it back to this one later.
