terrible skweaking after pad replacment
last weekend, i changed the front and rear pads on all four corners of my 1997 850. The change was much needed and the breaking is much better but i now have a terrible skweak comming from each of the back wheels. I figured i would give them a few days of good breaking to quiet down but there seems to be no change. has anyone run into this problem before? i have changed man a pad and shoe but these pads are driving me nuts.
Is this a problem primarily for the rear brakes? I replaced my fronts with aftermarket pads and have had no squeak problems. I will be replacing the rears soon.

Yes, there is a design flaw that requires the use of a cutout shim to reduce vibration squeel. Volvo has a shim kit for about $24 but it may or may not make a differance with non-oem pads. There are some premium aftermarket brands that do offer pads with their version of the anti-vibration shim that work better than OEM - NAPA Premium Ceramic and Bendix Ceramic Plus.

Have you noticed increased rotor wear or decreased stopping performance with the ceramic pads? I have heard some complaints about these issues with other vehicles.

The ceramic stop better than the stock pad. They are harder and do wear the disk more. They also get hotter so the chance of warping a rotor is greater. With hard driving you will not see the brake fade that you see with the non-ceramic pads.
The disk wear is really a non-issue as you can only get one turning out of a rotor if ther is no warpage and no metel to metal contact. It is not really a good idea to turn these rotors as the thinner material also increases the chance of warpage. The ceramic pad will last 2 to 3 times longer than stock and changing the rotor at that interval is fairly normal anyway.
The hotter running ceramic pad does require you to treat you brakes a little differently. I try to leave extra room when I come to a stop so that I can creep forward every 10 or so seconds to help keep the temp of the disk fairly even to help prevent the warpage. My daughter now drives the 850 and she is also practicing this habit.

I also replaced the front pads on my S70 and no squeeking whatsoever thusfar and I did notice a huge difference vs the OEM pad
