LOW VOLTAGE

Post by Guest »

The hot lead that supplies voltage to the cooling fan relay is reading only about 4.5 volts.
Does anyone have any reasons or checks I can make to figure out why? My battery has plenty of juice. Fuses are O.k.
As a result my cooling fan won't come on when needed. I replaced the sensor in the t stat housing and checked the relay by pulling one out of my other 850 all O.K.
Could it be a ground issue? What would cause the low voltage??

I found the problem! The hot lead for the cooling fan is routed in a loom that passes under the starter. However, the wire comes out of the loom just to the left of the starter and is then returned to the loom where it goes directly to the fuesbox and battery. Where it exited the loom by the starter it was almost corroded through. At one point i was getting full voltage on the lead however it could not supply the needed amperage to start the cooling fan. I knew it wasn't the relay and sensor!
I spliced a new lead in with a fuse and ran directly to the battery. Works perfect.
Beware, the fan lead into the relay has constant power even with the key off!

On the fan hot lead routing it may just attach to starter hot lead that's why it's exposed there. Regardless, it was rotted.
Ceck this wire first before throwing money away on a relay or t stat housing sensor.
