1993 850 hard starting and slow to accelerate

Post by loyd198 »

I have a 1993 Volvo 850 GLT non-turbo that I am having starting and accelerating problems. It takes 2 or 3 times of trying to start the car before it starts..once it starts it idles fine. However..it is very slow to accelerate up to 30mph and stumbles a bit also when it does finally accelerate. After it reaches 30mph or so it accelerates pretty good. I checked the engine code and it was for a cam position sensor which I replaced..I also replaced the fuel filter at the same time. Neither one of these repairs helped at all..does anyone have an idea where I should start next ?

Follow the wire to the cam position sensor, and move it as far as possible - duct tape, zip ties, etc away from the spark plugs wires as you can.

Are you, by chance, getting bad gas mileage or black smoke out the exhaust?

No..neither black smoke or bad gas mileage. I just cleaned the MAF sensor about half hour ago and reinstalled..that didn't help either. Also I didn't mention it is an automatic transmission..only symptons are hard to start and slow to accelerate and it hesistates also while accelerating under 30. Ove r30 mph it does pretty good but sometimes it will hesitate when accelearting very hard.

Do you have a check engine light? If so, I would pull the codes to see if anything comes up.

Could also be a clogged up cat.

122 Temp. sensor interval too long

A bad ECT sensor would certainly cause your condition, it was actually going to be my next guess.

The sensor is in the housing just under the thermostat, I advise getting a new thermostat put in there too (they're cheap!), as it's probably what caused the ECT to go in the first place.
