Volvo Repair Database Generic P80 AC clutch shim , bread clip, zip tie thread

Mod note

Spec is min 0.3 mm, max 0.5mm

( Many countries don’t use the metric system , so this is 0.012-0.020 thousandths of an inch.

Many = Yemen plus the USA)

Source alldata

My 850 is showing the well know AC clutch gap problem. Measured the gap and it is 0.035+ (0.035 is the largest feeler gauge I have.

Been saving clips and am ready to go.

Is access to the compressor better from under the car after removing the plastic shroud?

It is very easy from the bottom, I don't even want to think about going at it from the top. Two bolts and the air guide will come right off.

I do them from the top, it's really not that hard except for one clip.
Use a LONG screwdriver and you should OK

Why is one clip hard? Doesn't the clutch plate rotate? I can move mine around.

What is the symptom if the gap is too large? The compressor does not engage?

My AC runs great - for about 20 minutes. Then blows normal air. Turn it off, wait a while, turn it on and the cold air is back.

Gotten worse with all the really hot weather.

Measured the gap it is was more than the 0.02" spec.

On the photo on volvospeed, it shows the clips on top of the rubbeer washers. On mine, I can't get the clips on as the washer doesn't move enough or my clips are to thin.

Is there any reason I can't put the clips below the washers. They're held pretty tight there so I don't think they'd fly off if I spuer glued them there.

I'm not really sure what you mean by "below the washers" but you will need to pry the clutch with a screw driver or something to open up the place where he is showing that the bread clips go. I think if you try to put the clips anywhere else you will have difficulty getting a uniform gap around the circumferance of the clutch. Read the volvospeed post once more and see if it makes more sense. If not, can you post a picture of your clutch or even post his picture and point to the "washers"?

Probably should have said to the left or right of the washer (or whatever it is).

On the attached photo (not mine), I can get the clips where the right arrow points. Can't get them where the left arrow points.

Will it matter?
