OEM to Aftermarket Heater Hose Question '96 850R

Post by Aramelli »

I was reading up on a heater hose thread and found myself quite confused.

I discovered a leak in the line between the turbo and the engine and decided to go ahead and change the two heater hoses from the engine to the firewall at the same time.

I purchased the Uro aftermarket heater hoses and heater hose O-ring and clip set. When i pulled my OEM hoses off the firewall coupler I did not see any O-rings attached. Now am I supposed to dig into the firewall coupler and pry out the old o-rings or just use the clip that came with my "clip and o-ring set" and just push the hose back into the firewall coupler?

I was reading a thread on volvospeed about the o-rings on the interior side, but didn't mention the engine side. I'm so confused can anyone help me please.

**Summary**
Aftermarket "O-ring and clip set" comes with 4 black o-rings and 2 yellow, as well as a clip. I have removed the old OEM hose and no o-rings came out with it. What do i do next?

When I removed the old heater hoses, one had o-rings and the other did not. Maybe they're still in there, but I don't think so. I'll check it again tomorrow. I'm not putting the new ones on until I put the turbo back in.

You will need to remove the spacers and O rings from the socket and use the new ones. The OEM clip is slightly shorter than the aftermarket versions and they don't play together well.

Thanks Lee,

I'm in the process of prying out the old o-rings, those suckers are in there good.

Okay I removed the old O-rings and spacer and installed the O-rings that came with the kit. I put everything together and pressure tested only to find a leak on the lower shorter heater hose. I pulled it out checked it and checked it again and everything is correct. Any ideas as to why when i pressure it up it's leaking?

Also, I tried to add another o-ring and push it in, but it was just wouldn't go.

Are you sure it is fully seated? I had one that I thought I had snapped back in but it had not clicked and I had the same problem.

Yes, it clicked and everything. I started to feel around with my finger inside the coupler and noticed that the circular ring towards the end "Inside the coupler" was missing a quarter of it, and it was falling off on my finger as i touched it. I'm guessing because of that the rings can't make a good seal causing the leak? Anyone else weigh in on that?

Also, how easy is to change the whole coupler?

Coupler installs from the inside of the car. O rings on that side too if I remember right. I had metal tubes from the coupler to the heater core. Think you'll need to detach at the heater core then pull tubes out of coupler. O rings everywhere, replace them all. See Europarts for a nice break down of parts. If you do this read the write up on replacing the heater core. It will mention a hold screw buried at the rear side of the heater core that secures the metal tubes.

Yep, the o-rings that didn't come out were in there. I used a pick to get them out. A few of them flew out so I didn't see clearly what happened, but afterwards I noticed 2 small copper washers on the ground beneath the car. Where did those come from? Were they behind the yellow and black o-rings? They could have come from somewhere else, but I think they may have come out of the heater hose connector. Nobody mentioned any copper washers in there. Just when I have everything ready to put the car back together, now I'm worried about where these washers came from. Anybody familiar with these?
