one vent blows warm air the rest cool

Post by islandmomof4 »

1995 850 Wagon and when the a/c is on all vents blow cool air except for the one in the center that goes to passenger side. No lights flashing on "rec" nor "a/c". Coolant is within specified range per manual.
Could I use a vac to suck out around cabin sensors? I have a couple spare sensors that I picked up at the local junkyard. If needing to replace sensors, does the require an act of congress or can a girl that follows directions well get the job done?

Only other issue I am having is the air turns warm after running a few minutes. I have noticed earlier in the day it runs longer before turning warm. I have read "shim fix" thread and am attempting this tonight (God help me).

I've got the same problem. I think it is a problem with the damper motors or the damper arms.

Your situation is curious in that only one vent is hot, the ECC divides the system into halves, driver's side and passenger's side but the only control of individual vents is the damper that is next to each vent. If one side (ie passenger's or driver's) was stuck on hot or cold I would suspect the damper motor or the shaft at the end of the damper motor.

Since your problem is only with the center vent I am guessing that you may have a bad damper door on the fresh air intake. It is fairly easy to see if that is the problem, you only need to remove the center vents and then observe the damper position as the fresh air knob is being turned.

I started noticing this last year (1996 850 GLT Wagon) with the center passenger-side vent. The temp sensors were covered in lint, but removing that didn't help the situation any.

I'll have to give a look myself to see if it is a bad damper door.

Just over the weekend, I started to notice a faint clicking noise (maybe once every 30 seconds or so... kind of iffy on the exact timing) coming from the passenger side (may have been the center vent or the side vent... another set of better ears couldn't help pinpoint it) that only seemed to be active when the car was in motion and the AC was on. When we sat idling, there was no clicking. Also, it didn't start right away after starting the car.

Could this be related (or a more advanced case) to the first problem?

Most of the clicking type noises are from a broken damper motor gear or a split shaft - in many cases it is the recirc motor or lever. The recirc damper is located on the intake to the blower system, just below the cowl above the blower motor. Pull the glove box out and you should be able to identify which motor is causing the problem.
