Replacing/Upgrading '96 850 Turbo Head Lamps

Post by Johnny5487 »

I was wondering if y'all could give me some advice on replacing the Head Lamps in my 96 Volvo 850 Turbo.

I recently purchased some Sylvania Whitestar Halogens at my local Pep Boys here in Burbank, CA and wanted some pointers in the safest and most effiecient way to remove the old bulbs and install the new ones.

I have my Haynes manual handy, but after removing the Head Lamp cap behind the headlight I was wondering how much torque do I need to apply to get the old lamps out? Do they turn a certain way for removal??

I know that the Sylvania's may not be the wisest purchase after visiting the AutoOptiks website, but I am willing to give them a try.

Any and all advice is welcomed and appreciated.

Thanks for your time,

John

Hey, I am new here, but I think I have some advice on putting in some Sylvania lights. I just did this a week ago, so it is still fresh in my mind :P

Step 1 - Remove the cover cap (you already mentioned)

Step 2 - Stand so YOU are looking at your headlights (front end of your car)

Step 3 - Reach down to your headlight, and turn it COUNTER-CLOCKWISE until it is free from the holder

Step 4 - Detach old headlights, and put in a safe place (in case you ever need them again)

Step 5 - Put in the new Sylvania Whitestars (I have the Silverstars) without getting any oil on the bulb (meaning don't touch it with your hand, use a light towel to clean it if you happen to)

Step 6 - Put the headlight holder in, and then turn CLOCKWISE until you can't anymore

Step 7 - Place headlight cover back over the installed headlight

Step 8 - Do Steps 1-7 on the other headlight (unless you did them at the same time)

Step 9 - Wait until it is dark, then turn on your headlight and your face will look like :P  :o  8) all at once

Thanks for the advice Carson.

Thats exactly what I was looking for. Wasn't looking forward to messing up my lamp housings by turning the lights the wrong direction on removal.

Much appreciated,

John
