Hey guys, I have a 2002 S60 with 73,000 miles, and I am suspicious that its ETM is failing. A couple months ago it started to hesitate on the highway, but still seemed to be driving fine in town. Then it developed an uneasy idle, like it had a vacuum leak. I looked for leaks, found one and fixed it, but the problem persisted. Soon the car sounded like I had installed a huge cam in it, and now it dies right after startup, unless I keep it running by pressing the throttle, at which point it revs to 3K and drops, then either resumes idling rough or dies again. About 20% of startups result in a smooth running engine, but with very non-linear throttle response. I went and got the codes read, and OBDII said it was either a bad MAF or throttle position sensor. Being ignorant of the problems with Volvo ETMs, I replaced the MAF to no avail. Also replaced the spark plugs at this point (both the plugs and MAF are OEM). Then I started hitting the internet, and found this forum.
So my question is: is my car on the list of vehicles manufactured with faulty ETMs?
Current codes are: P0068 MAF/Throttle Position, P0221 TPS, P0300 Random Misfire, and P0301 Cyl 1 Misfire.

I live in Fargo, ND, and the closest Volvo dealer/service station is more than 200 miles away, so any help you can give would be appreciated! Kinda wish I would have decided to drive something made in 1967 so I could fix the thing...

I took out the ETM yesterday and did not see either a yellow or a white sticker on it. I opened the side and there was a semicircle resistance strip with two gears to drive the butterfly valve. Is this a model that XeMODeX can fix? I am attaching pictures of the ETM.

Jordan,
I'm curious if you ever determined the cause of the problems that you were experiencing. I'm having very similar issues with my 02 S60 as well. If you got it fixed, I'd like to know what the solution was, and hopefully it'll help lead my in the right direction.
Thanks,
Adam

I would try to eliminate the misfire code on #1 cyl. first, before replacing the throttle. Since you did the plugs already all is left is the coil on that cylinder. Once you got that out of the way and still have idle problems call us we have Bosch throttles in stock. There is no messing around with software, just plug and play.
