My S60 2.5T 2004 is whining/whirring. The sound seems to be coming from the driver side up near the front of the engine compartment. The noise begins when the ignition switch is set to "on", continues while the engine is running, and stops about 30 seconds after the engine has been turned off.
Since I began hearing the noise, it sometimes takes an extra crank to get 'er going. The engine will turn over but stall on the first try.
If anyone has advice on where I should start looking in order to diagnose the problem, I'd appreciate your thoughts.
Thanks.

Shoot, I know what that is and I can't remember right now
I'll ask my mechanic tomorrow (my lack of hands on work with P2s).
and I think the word you are looking for is WHINING

Could the whining have something to do with my power steering pump? It starts when the ignition is set to "on" (without the engine running), which leads me to believe that it must be coming from some electrical part.

P2s do not have an air pump, that was over after 1998!

Volvo had a recall (they call it a "campaign" because a recall is mandated while a campaign is voluntary) concerning the breather box...It happened to me daughter's S40 and it sounded like the bearings in the fan went...It causes oil consumption (the oil collects in the breather box) and the noise goes away when you pull the dipstck, depressurizing the crankcase...I am not sure what Volvo did to remedy it, but it did not cost her anything...Apparently the S40 is not the only model it happens with...It makes A LOT of noise...

That is not an air pump you're hearingjda2000 wrote:I kindly disagree JRL, my '07 2.5T S60 has an air pump ( or some kind of pump that whirs at start up) right in the area mentioned.
