Just a quick tip... I didn't have a ratchet small enough to reach in therewith my e5 bit so I improvised.
I found a hex bit (like one of those interchangable bit drivers) to 1/4 inch drive socket adapter and used a closed end 1/4 inch wrench to turn it. The bit I had was fairly long, about two inches without the socket and had good reach. I removed the air box and used my right hand over the abs unit to position and hold the wrench and my left hand between the abs unit and transmission to turn the wrench. I only needed the wrench to break the bolts, then I used the socket and adapter to unscrew them by hand.
15 minutes to remove, forever to carefully open and fix, and another 15 to reinstall.
I used a dab of flux on each leg to help the solder reflow. I had a 30 watt iron for the pins and a 150 watt gun for the power lugs. I reflowed and tested each leg to make sure I only had to do it once. Then I sealed it with a lot of rtv.

Do It Yourself ABS Module Repair
Quick question: My module is enroute to Module Masters for repair, but when I removed the module I forgot to take out the fuse. I take it this is fuse #4 from the main fuse box? Is there any damage to leaving the fuse in? Car has been driven a few kilometers since taking the module out. I thought I better ask this to prevent any damage to the hydraulics.

You should survive, I did this once or twice myself. Disconnecting the battery does the same thing as taking the fuse out. Ideally you want no power to be flowing when you plugin/unplug any electrical component. You can leave the fuse in until you are pluggign the rebuilt module back in.zdh wrote:Quick question: My module is enroute to Module Masters for repair, but when I removed the module I forgot to take out the fuse. I got the module off easily. getting it apart was difficult and I cracked the first resistor. Does anyone know what it is so I can replace it. Is it ok to drive w/o the module?

You can drive without the module but you won't have the speedometer or odometer functioning - the ABS or the TRACS won't work either but they are rarely used. I would suggest wrapping the connectors in a Baggie while the unit is removed to protect the connectors from road grime.

I did my module recently and had the same results, it took a few days/trips of on again, off again, on again lights. The lights have now been off for more than a week and I'm confident it will stay like that. Give it a little while to see if that helps you, otherwise maybe the re-solder didn't take well. I had difficulty getting the silicone circuit board covering off which really impedes the quality of soldering. Good luck.

Just did this repair myself and it worked like a champ. I picked up another module from a donor just in case I trashed the first one, but once I re=installed the repaired moduel back in, the abs and tracs light went away and have been gone ever since( about a month and counting. Great info guys.

Thanks for a very helpful post. I was haunted by this problem in my 1998 XC70 AWD (but my brother totalled that car, thus solving the issue). Just bought a 2000 XC70 AWD SE a couple of months ago, and was not surprised when ABS and TRACS lights starting lighting up intermittently. Staring at a $1000 repair, I poked around and found this board. I had no idea the speedometer and odometer failures were related to the ABS module. Happy to find out one fix covers all open issues!
What a relief to find the solution! I shipped the module off to ModuleMasters, and look to get it back in a couple of days.
Thanks again!!

Did you have your Abs module sent to BBA in Concord, Ontario. I sent mine and he paid for the shipping which was nice. $65. After diagnosis I was told there was nothing wrong with my ABS.
Amazingly, I recieved a full refund - no questions asked, and again he shipped the item back free of charge.
I returned to the stealership and demanded to have a full look at the diagnosis, and sure enough it mentioned a left rear wheel sensor. I replaced the wheel sensor and no more ABS light is being triggered.

They've done studies you know. 60% of the time I work, every time!
