850 T5 Intermitant No start/Dies

Post by NiksT5 »

Hey so i just recently bought a cherry 1994 850 T5 for $800. 135k fully loaded, and the only problem is an intermitant no start/dies. It has this problem so spiratic. Sometime if i go to start it within about 2 minutes of turning it off it wont start till it waits a few minutes. One weekend it will drive fine all weekend and then jsut today it died on me twice in traffic. I wait about 2-5 minutes and it starts right up! The fuel pump was just replaced by the previous owner trying to track down the problem. I was thinking Coil maybe? Any ideas or anything please chime in!!! i need your help!

Pull out the codes and post'em here and then we will try to help you.

Since you have '94 model you can do that like this:

Sounds like the fuel pump/fuel injection relay. Relay 103. This happened to me. I repaired mine (https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... hp?p=32573) and it worked for awhile. However with the extreme heat lately and the quality of the capapcitors I put in... it failed again. So I purchased one at O'Rileys for $42. The repair cost about $2 and about an hour with the correct tools.

Ehh i thought about that but it doesnt buzz, humm or vibrate, and is not original as there is no orange stripe across it. also how could a relay such as that be an intermitant problem? not saying it cant, just cant figure out how.

It's not suppose to buzz or anything. The only thing that can buzz under the hood with the key in ignition II is the main fuel injection relay located at the fan carrier(the grey one) & idle air valve.

Check your EVAP valve...same problem with my 850 years ago.... When its fails, lets pass some fuel vapour to intake...(remember its a one way valve).. your engine fail random?? dies at high way speed??? refuses to start hot?? and 5 minutes later start without problems??

Yeah it is completely rando, but hasnt done it on the highway and i have driven 70+ miles in one direction. It has died twice in town though, in the same day. Yeah i would say completely random. Yeah if i start and stop the car a few times it will refuse to start. I do have spark when this is happening, when the engine is cranking over it sparks so i now know its now the coil. EVAP valve would make sense. Is there any relay that controls teh ECU? cause that would make sense aswell. It gets hot from repeated use and sticks open untill it cools? Thanks for the help so far guys!

Well it was in fact the Fuel Pump relay. I guess there is a loose connection or something. It is completely clipped down but will every now and then loose connection and it will die/or not start.
