unpredicable overheating issue Topic is solved

1991 Volvo 240 wagon....

I'll be driving for less than 5 minutes and redlining the heat... then, if I just shut off the car and turn it back on, the heat drops to normal and stays there. Then it wont happen for a week and suddenly it happens three times in one day.. always the same case scenairo... turn it off and turn it right back on again and no problems. Car has a little history of overheating without cause and previously the thermostat was changed. Any clues, ideas?

I don't believe you are having an Overheating issue. What you have been experiencing with the temp gauge going to red is actually an electrical problem. In the instrument cluster there is an electronic board that regulates the voltage to the temperature gauge. It is called a " Temperature Compensator Board" . It is a common problem. That part is available all over the net and can be easily replaced.
