oil trap
How do you replace an oil trap in a 1994 940 Turbo? Do I have to move the intake manifold out of the way?

If you have full mobility in your arm and wrist joints you can do this without taking the intake manifold off.

Are you referring to the flame trap or the breather box?
Generally speaking, both can be cleaned without removal by liberal use of a carburetor cleaner. With the engine off, the oil filler cap removed, and a rubber hose inserted on the breather box, you should be able to blow through it, which indicates it is unobstructed.
After cleaning out with carburetor cleaner, be sure to change your oil.

I wasn't aware that the turbo does not have a flame trap.
However, my point was both the flame trap and/or breather box can be cleaned.

Nor was I until I bought my 940T. I set out to clean it as part of my 'getting it the way I want it' service and couldn't find it. I meekly asked my good friend, who is a Volvo tech about it and was told in no uncertain terms that it didn't have one, didn't need one and why was I wasting my time looking for it? He then told me why: The flametrap is used to prevent the hot and oily crankcase vented stuff being ignited on the intake side. On the turbo models, the hot and oily stuff passes into the turbo.I wasn't aware that the turbo does not have a flame trap.
We are still good friends.

My oil trap for my 1994 940 Turbo looked a bit different from your pictures with two 12mm bolts. The reason I needed a new one was I snapped the top hose connection off when I did the head gasket. It came out easy...going to put the new one in now...thanks again Bill for the pictures
I have a 1994 940 non-turbo wagon with the 4 cylinder, 8 valve engine. I just bought it, and it shows the signs of a clogged flame trap. I was looking over what it takes to get to the oil separator. Not easy! Mine is so old that I doubt just squirting brake cleaner will work.
I looked at it from below, and I jut wondered-- if you pulled the starter, could you get at the oil separator from underneath? Or maybe through the driver's side wheel well with the liner removed? That looks easier than pulling the intake manifold.

Have you checked/replaced the flame trap? You may not need to go to the oil separator if the flame trap is the culprit.it shows the signs of a clogged flame trap
A quick check for the separator is to remove the top hose from the box and attach a length of 3/8 or 1/2" hose. Remove the oil filler cap and blow into the hose. If you feel resistance the box may be restricted. If it is restricted it is probably loaded with sludge and the easiest course is to replace it rather than trying to clean it. The oil separator is not in the Volvo maintenance programme because it's usually not a problem. However, if oil changes are are extended way past the specified intervals it can become a problem.
I have never given any thought to attacking the separator from any direction except the top. It can be removed without taking the inlet manifold off. I used a 1/4 inch metric socket set with a couple of extensions to get into the tight space.
If you do remove the separator you will need a new O ring which, if my memory hasn't failed me, is 34mm inner diameter x 3mm.
