2000 S40 CEM

Post by Glennr »

I lost both my intermittent wipers and turn signals within a few weeks of each other. I've been told that it might be the CEM. I will try the flasher relay first but troubleshooting is hard since the car is out of state with my daughter.
Can a used CEM be installed (volvo part too expensive)? Can it be from a different year like 01 or 02? Does any programming need to be done (to the module itself or maybe the key)?

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

VADIS lists the part number as 30896697 and says it is for up to the 2001 model year. Running the same number on FCP's site shows the part for models from 2000 - 2004.

On replacing the module the only instruction given in VADIS is "Reset the settings from the CEM functions via VIDA carcommunication." It would appear the dealer has to be involved.

I keep hearing different things. Several people including dealers say that a used CEM cannot be used. Something about it being flashed with something specific to the car which cannot be cleared before installing in a different car. Others insist that just replacing the old with a used and setting nothing will work.
Anyone know for sure?

Also, every non-Volvo source that I have tried does not carry the CEM. Does anyone know of someone other than Volvo who might?

Thanks.

I have read differing reports on used versus new and have been unable to find a definite answer. I do know that the CEM is branded to the car and if it is to be replaced the info inside it is downloaded to the VIDA unit and then transferred to the new unit. This info cannot be overwritten. I have also read that some of the info in the CEM is specific to the car for which it was branded and this may cause a conflict in the electronics system.

To get the best possible and impartial advice you could call BBA-reman who rebuild all types of modules.
