need advice on changing transmission fluid on V70:+?
I just purchased a 2003 v70 the transmission fluid is brown like oil..color.. I do not know when or if the fluid has been changed. I took it to a mechanic and he went to Volvo to purchase the fluid to change it..They would not sell him the 140.00 fluid as they said this year volvo is not recommended to change the fluid or flush. Also they said the fluid inside the transmission is to last for the life of the car.?? Sounds Like BS to me.. I had volvos before and my old mechanic did change the fluid.. but I've moved and no longer have that mechanic.. It has been a struggle to find someone here in Knoxville. The dealer is a real rip off.. for everything..Please any advice??? Also, I had the check engine light come on and the computer at mechanics said it was the MAP manifold Intake pressure sensor P0106? The mechanic trouble shot and found only a small clogged hose and then cleared the check engine light. The car also has a rough drone roar when put foot on gas pedal excelerate at all. A sound I know it should not be making.. as I've driven a V70 for years before this one. I was told the sound is something to do with exhaust system..?? Could the map sensor P01006 be connected to this roaring sound at exceleration?? It almost sounds like a muffler sound but coming from the engine I think>>?? Obviously, I need a good mechanic that knows Volvos.. but so far I have found guy that cheated me and took my money and did NONE of the work.. including brakes that were metat to metal and he let me drive away with no brakes like this telling me he replaced them.. as well as my timing belt and he did NOTHING>> Only found this out due to the check engine light coming on and taking it to another mechanic and they found I had no brakes DANGEROUS.. I really got ripped off Guys.. And someone could have been killed due to this guy.. who just took my money... Ladies be aware don't use a mechanic that does side work out of his own house garage off site from his regular job.. just to save money or so you think.. I could have been killed or another person with the brakes like that.. He must be on Drugs.. This is a guy I've used for over one year.. Any advice on trans fluid change, or the map sensor, or the roar?? thanks Alice

U have to replace your atf asap w/ Mobil1 3309 or toyota T IV atf w/c cost about 5.99 each qt. The dealer atf is too expensive and is also a 3309. Go to a reputable mechanic and if it's still diagnosed for a bad MAP sensor, have it replaced. The roaring sound could be the turbo kicking in (if ur car is equipped w/ turbo). There is a writeup on how to change atf on this site and you can have this procedure done by somebody else or just do the simple drain and refill. After a couple of hundred miles repeat the drain/refill procedure ;until fluid is clean and reddish. Enjoy and get used to that drone roar of the turbo but if ur car is non turbo then have the exhaust system checked for leaks. Take care of that car and you'll soon be in wonderland.

Thanks for advice, My car is not a turbo, so what is the roaring?? exhaust? system, is that connected to Map sensor?? The check engine light came back on today after being off only less than 24 hours. I must find a mechanic here in Knoxville, tn that knows how to do this transmission change gingerly.. Do I go to toyota to buy the mobil 3309 fluid?? Thanks so very much .. for advice.. I hope to get this car taken care of.. without going to dealer but I am most concerned re: check engine light.. is it safe to drive until tues or wed when take it back to mechanic for further check on the map and exhaust problem?? How expensive is the map sensor? does anyone know??
Mobile 3309 is available from http://store.avlube.com/ . Delivered price to me for a case was about $67 .

Alice,
perhaps this is something simple you can do yourself, the drain and fill procedure x3.
Go to your local toyota dealer and buy a case of Type IV tranny fluid, about $5 a quart. About 4 quarts drain out when you remove the plug. Refill with same amount that came out. Repeat this procedure a couple more times every 250 miles and you'll be set.

Mobil 3309=Toyota Type 1V= Volvo 3309
Mobil makes the SAME fluid for eveyone, the label is the only difference
Bet bet is to buy it from Toyota
Do a couple of drain and fills

drian plug on bottom of trans, remove and replace and fill at the ;ittle yellow trans dip stick with about 3.5 qts of 3309. new mobil one atf works on 3309 now.
when i got my 2004 with 113K miles i had no records of it being done either but not brown like oil in yours. so right now i do it at the same time i change my oil..

Sorry for jumping in here guys- we have an 01 V70 that is new to us. 101K miles. Just this week it started becoming a little noticeable when shifting from 2nd-3rd and vice versa. It's definitely something I can feel and I can see the RPMs jump/drop when it happens. Not sure if the transmission fluid has ever been serviced- the prior owner has the service manual dated and stamped by the dealer up until 36K miles but after that there is nothing in the book. My husband said the first thing to do is to change the transmission fluid but after reading all the warnings here not to flush an unknown transmission, I would rather her attempt this himself (maybe LOL) than bring it to a mechanic who may make the fatal mistake of flushing it and dislodging stuff. Really not looking forward to taking this to a dealer, and wish we knew of an independent Volvo mechanic in our area. We've already had to replace the MAF sensor , and we've only had the car for 2 months, plus we need the timing belt replaced and the engine mounts are "shot" (at least that's what we've been told is causing the engine vibration) and the suspension sounds a bit noisy to me. Funny how the car checked out ok by a mechanic before we bought it though. :/
