Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

T6 Turbo Replacement

Post by volvosharkk »

I purchased a 2002 volvo t6 about 9 months ago and for 6 months loved the car. Over last three months, it has leaked oil, blown sporadic smoke and squealed when I turned left. Took it in to the dealer and was told need to replace oil trap ($1000), front turbo ($2500) and some misc other things ($2000)....Had oil trap replaced which stopped the leak. Not to bad with a wrench so found some fantastic directions on this site and replaced the wheel bearing which stopped the squealing. Now for the turbo....

Car blows blue smoke sporatically and when it does, its a cloud - not to mention the smell of exhaust. The turbos do not appear to whine but since dealer already diagnosed, must be one of the turbos. Figure I will go to salvage yard and get a used device but cannot find any step by step instructions on pulling out a turbo. Also - dealer said 'front' turbo - does that refer to 1-3-5? Can someone either post step by step, or give some general advice and getting it out. Thanks Tim

Front turbo is powered by cylinders 1,2 and 3. Replacing the turbo unit is not an easy task and every tech has his own way of doing it. The biggest obstacle is the oil return pipe that is hard to disconnect and even harder to connect back on. This and some other steps must be done while the car is on the hoist. My advice to you is if used is what you want, then ask the junk yard that you are buying the turbo from to quote you for the installation as well.

Thanks for replying. Unfortunately the salvage yard does not install parts so either I buck up and have the dealer do it, or attempt myself. As much as I would rather have the dealer handle, $2500 not in the budget. With that said, any special tools or starting points would be extremely helpful:)

Here are the instructions from my copy of VADIS. You can buy for real cheap a copy of VADIS off the internet. Just search in ebay or ???
If you still think you want to tackle the job and want more of the instructions uploaded let me know which specific ones your are interested in....

Just want to point out that VADIS is contained on a CD i.e. not a hard copy book. Has lots of pictures and search function. Not bad but also not the greatest in my opinion...
