Error Codes: p0243, p0171, and p0442

Car is a 1998 Volvo S70 turbo

When i go to take off from a stop, occasionally the car will want to die, and the battery light will flicker on and off. The force applied to the gas pedal makes no difference, but the car will eventually get past the hiccup.

So I started off with p0442...the other 2 are new as of today. So far to try and remedy this, i have replaced the "J" shaped line and also the "L" shaped back near the canister and also the purge valve upfront on the radiator shroud. I do no see any other visible cracks. any ideas where to start next?

where the "J" line and the "L" line connect to in the rear...is that a valve? or just plastic connector? If so, what's the name of that circular looking valve next to the charcoal canister?

That's the shut-off/rollover valve. Not a too-common failure item, as it has no electrical signal to it.

I'd follow the line from the canister/fuel tank up to the front of the engine and check it for cracks along the way.

Where is your canister? It's at the front of my S70.

rear of the car next to the fuel filter area. i took off the plastic covering and didnt find any?

If i remember correctly, P0442 is the catalytic converter efficiency bellow threshold (bank 1). I had this in my 200 V70 XC. At first, when the light came on and i found what it was, i got really worried, especially that a catalytic converter for this car wouldnt be cheap and everyone said an after market wasnt any good. BUt i cleared the cod. Its showed up a week later and i still reset it. Then about 2-3 weeks went by when it showed up again, but i cleared it. Then its been over 1-2 months and i didnt have the code again. When i sold the car, it passed smog check (in california, which is always the hardest) without a problem. A way i was told to see if the Cat. Conv was really bad is if you bagnged/hit it from under the car, if u heard rattling noises or like gravel was tumbling around in there, its bad. But if it sounded solid/hollow, you are good. I wouldnt worry too much about this code.

p0442 is evap system small leak. this is the code i am worried about as it has been giving me issues. i can't pull out into traffic without the fear of the car stumbling over itself and almost dying then getting hit.

where is the purge solenoid located? i thought i replace it, but apparently it was the air pump solenoid

Left corner of the radiator.

See it hiding there at the bottom left of the picture?

Disconnect the line into the intake manifold and go for a quick drive; do you still get stumbling like crazy? If that solves your problem, please reconnect the line or plug it up with something until you can get a new valve. Gas fumes from the line in a hot engine compartment are asking for disaster.

just changed the valve. i'll report back in a week if there's no CEL
