Found this site today and got a whole load of info to take to my mechanic (actually, is it time to change the mechanic if I can find this and he can't...?)

Anyway, I have a 1994 850 2.5L 20v auto which has been stalling for around six months now (~190,000 miles). The last time I took the car to the mechanic the reported fault was an "idle control valve" which had deposits on it. The valve was cleaned but did not solve the problem.

I have since been trying to match the problem to particular events. Yes, the stalling is worse when the car is warm but I have found that with careful throttle control the car does not stall:

1. When trying to travel at a steady speed I find that of I lightly press the throttle and then release it to keep my speed very close to the speed limit (30mph in town) the car will stall. However, if I press the throttle a little harder and let the speed build before completely lifting off and letting the car slow itself down, it does not stall.

2. When approaching a junction or when coming to a halt I have found that arriving at speed and braking hard nearly always causes the stall. However, if I arrive braking gently and allowing the gearbox to engage each gear in turn as it slows, it doesn't stall. Stopping in this way means that the car will restart even if it has not had time to cool down.

Anyone else noticed these effects?

Most likely your ETM/TB needs a cleaning or replacement. The stalling while decelerating is the classical symptom. I'd clean or have it cleaned first. There is an investigation into the ETMs in the '99-01 models but even though the older ones are more electro/mechanical they still have some problems.

If it stalls out at normal speed or anytime, I would look at the CPS, especially if it won't resart after the engines warm until it cools again, or the fuel pump relays or fuel pump.
